Are VoIP calls free? This is a loaded question and varies from provider to provider. Here is how it typically works:
- US and Canada Calls: These calls are typically free. If you’re still getting charged to call or receive calls out of state, it’s time to revisit your phone bill.
- International Calls: These calls are typically not free and are rated per minute depending on the where the calls are being placed. The VoIP company you work with or plan to work with should be able to provide a rate sheet for you.
- Toll-Free Calls: These calls are free ONLY if you are calling a toll-free number. If you own a toll-free number, typically you have to pay for the number and the minutes are rated. Toll-free numbers are a great added value for your customers but a cost to the business. Any good VoIP provider should have strategies on how to keep the toll-free charges to you DOWN so you maximize profitability.
- Faxing: Faxing technically is not a call but it can be free or rated per minute depending on the VoIP Service Provider. Your current VoIP provider should be able to tell you the exact rate if there is one. Or you’re potential VoIP provider should be able to provide those rates but also estimates based on your last few fax bills.
- Texting: Yes! You can text with VoIP phones. Of course, the functionality varies from provider to provider. Typically, texting is an add-on feature but doesn’t have a per text cost. Some VoIP providers may charge per text or after X amount of texts, it is charged per text.
Too long didn’t read? Some calls are free! 90% of people don’t have to worry about call charges with VoIP phone services. However, there are specific cases like international calls, toll-free calls, etc. which will need to be discussed with your VoIP provider. These charges should be transparent and not something you find out as a “Gotcha!” after you’ve signed up for the service.
